Quizizz is a great formative assessment tool that allows teachers to evaluate their students' progress immediately and digitally. The site walk you through every step of the process to create a quiz, starting with the title and opening image. After naming your quiz, you have the ability to create multiple choice questions with any number of answers you wish. Additionally, Quizizz lets you borrow questions already created. You can further customize your quiz by adjusting the time limit for each question, color-coding pieces of text, adding images, and allowing for multiple answers. As the students take the quiz, the teacher can view the leader board, top scores, and accuracy percentage. By offering multiple features to measure the students' understanding of the lesson, Quizizz simplifies formative assessment for educators.
This tech tool works well with two domains of the Danielson Framework. It aids teachers in Domain 1: Planning and Preparation by allowing teachers to craft formative assessments ahead of time that cater to the needs of their students. By knowing how long it takes for students to read prompts and process the questions, teachers can better set a time limit that works for their learners' needs. Additionally, students would be allowed to work at their own pace and read the questions on their own screens, making the learning more student-centered. When teachers take the time to prepare an assessment using this tool, they are investing in their students through the preparation stage. Quizizz also supports Domain 3: Instruction by providing direct feedback as the students take the quiz in class. The teacher can incorporate the assessment into the lesson to engage the learners and communicate the objectives in a fun way. Ultimately, Quizizz offers a way to reflect on the students' knowledge and the educators' success at teaching the material.
This assessment tool also ties into the ISTE Standards for Students, specifically when referencing the first standard: Empowered Learner. By demonstrating their knowledge of a subject through speed and accuracy on the questions, the students promote component 1c, which emphasizes the use of technology and direct feedback for questions. Through this tool, students can also identify areas of improvement through the feedback and set personal goals for themselves (1a). In addition to the ISTE Standards, Quizizz works well with the Four C's of Teaching and Learning. As mentioned previously, Quizizz provides a method of communication between students and teachers as students demonstrate their knowledge with each question, and teachers receive the feedback and measurements on their screen. This streamlines the process of clearing up confusion and teaching the concepts in a different way to make them more understandable. Students can also collaborate and work together in teams to solve problems. Teachers can also send scores directly to parents to improve the collaboration and communication between school and the home. Based on the difficulty level of the questions, students may have to think critically and utilize test-taking strategies to pick the best answers. Quizizz offers more creativity on the teacher's end, since the educator can customize the assessment and make it visually appealing to the students.
Because of Quizizz's versatility, I recommend its usage in the classroom. It provides an engaging atmosphere that might feel like a game more than an assessment, motivating more students to participate. Unlike some other assessment tools, Quizizz allows students to see the questions on their own screens. They can work at individual paces instead of having to wait for everyone to answer, which relives some of the pressure or embarrassment from students who typically process information slower. The set-up of this tech tool strengthens kids' skills in both the content area and in completing multiple choice assessments accurately. However, I have one complaint: when taking the quizzes, the tool informs students of their rankings compared to other classmates, which could discourage some kids from continuing to try. As long as teachers provide appropriate encouragement to all individuals, though, this tool is classroom-friendly and useful for improving teaching methods.
