"Don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins."
Recently, I received the opportunity to craft a lesson plan for a fifth grade class centered around a novel of my choice. Due to its beautifully intricate web of thematic and character connections, I chose to design my plan for Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. The book deals with tough lessons about grief, family, and change. For many students, these heavy topics are a sad reality, so I felt that I needed to address them along with revealing the hope that springs up in multiple parts of the novel despite the heartache.
For a better glimpse into the world of this novel, I recommend visiting Sharon Creech's website (listed below). In addition, I have posted the YouTube read-alouds for this novel. After each chapter, I recommend pausing the video and writing down your thoughts and reflections in a journal. The main character of this book, Sal, is extremely introspective, and I think she models a habit which could help all of us cope with our troubles. Additionally, I have posted a discussion board for the many themes that pop up throughout the novel. These slides also contain minilessons from my unit plan and explicit instruction on vocabulary.
